Transforming pharmacy training with interactive, scenario-based learning

How Apokus strengthened engagement and learning outcomes for 8,000+ pharmacy employees with We Are.

About Apokus

Apokus is Norway's National Centre for Pharmacy Development, training 8,000 pharmacy employees across Norway. Their mission is to enhance these employees' skills as drug advisors, improving customer advice quality and ensuring better medication use.

They develop in-house online courses with subject matter experts, focusing on practical knowledge for pharmacies.

The challenge

Apokus faced the challenge of delivering effective training that not only increased knowledge but also drove real changes in practice, particularly in communication skills. Scenario-based learning, crucial for enhancing these skills, was previously too resource-intensive to develop. Traditional role-playing methods were challenging to organize and execute in a busy pharmacy environment, making them impractical as the only option for large-scale implementation.

The solution

To tackle these challenges, Apokus partnered with We Are Learning to create interactive, scenario-based training modules. For a course on the correct use of nasal sprays, they aimed to address significant misuse issues and the difficulties employees face in discussing these products with customers. Using We Are, they developed digital role-playing scenarios that allowed employees to practice these conversations in a safe environment. Apokus employees wrote the scripts, animated the Stories, and recorded their own voices, transforming renowned communication expert Bård Fossli Jensen into a 3D character to guide employees through best practices.

The results

The implementation was a success, with 3,500 pharmacy employees completing the training in the first 4-6 weeks — 80% opting for the scenario-based approach, while 20% chose traditional role-playing. After the program launch, a survey (1-6) was distributed to evaluate its effectiveness, yielding overwhelmingly positive results.

These scores reflect the training's success in meeting objectives and the learners' satisfaction with the content and delivery. Employees particularly appreciated the flexibility to train anytime!

Technical solution

Scenario-based training has previously been far too resource-intensive for us to develop. But with We Are, we finally saw the opportunity to create it ourselves —without requiring an extensive budget.

Conclusion

By partnering with We Are Learning, Apokus successfully introduced innovative training that pharmacy employees found to be an effective method for improving customer dialogue skills. As Bård Fossli Jensen, Senior Physician, Ph.D., and TED speaker, said, “We Are has developed the best simulation tool we have come across. And we have searched extensively!” This collaboration has enabled Apokus to scale its training efficiently while maintaining high learning standards.

"With We Are, we got started quickly with minimal training, and now we handle everything ourselves, creating animations entirely in-house. I never thought, as a pharmacist, that I’d be able to add '3D animator' to my CV."

- Susanne Ankarstrand, Development Pharmacist at Apokus
